I’ve been cruising around Rookie this afternoon; cause even this 40 year old finds it a good read, and am loving ask a grown man, a regular spot where girls send in questions and these are answered by “grown men”. It’s sweet, it’s honest and it’s almost painful to watch (mainly because I remember asking the same questions…and even when I found out the answers, still kept asking the same questions…). featured here is Dave Hill, but I love BJ Novak I think the most.

THINK: BE OPEN TO THE WORLD OF WOW

I have been a bit slow to get back into posting this 2012. Work was busy, then slowed down a bit over the last week so I have treated myself to movies and manicures and art exhibitions on days when I normally work from home.

I have been thinking though about a couple of things these last few weeks. One is about some study results that were doing the rounds a few years ago about how parents don’t get increased life satisfaction via their kids. (read the link if you get a moment - it’s a great article). Our son is getting more talkative, and more “willfull”. Some days I am left frustrated and angry - usually linked with my fears I am not a good parent and his behaviour is somehow linked to some inadequacies that I have yet to identify.

But I have to say, this last few months has been pretty cool. Despite these down moments, it’s been pretty interesting to see things through his eyes. I commented this weekend to my husband how often he says “Wow!” - and not just “wow” but “wooooowwww” with a big cheer. He says wow at big trucks, tiny birds, bees swarming around gum blossoms blooming beside the museum, swirly cup cakes, big milkshakes, whale sharks he obsessively watches on our iPad and tiny wooden trains that zoom down little bridges on his train set. Everyday is filled with many things he thinks are “wow”. Matt said “Yeah, I guess his world is full of wow right now.”

There is a part of parenting that is about imparting (and imposing) your world view on your kids. But the part that is cool and a little unexpected is receiving and absorbing some of their world view. Noticing small details. Taking joy in the fun and crazy side of life. Being able to say “wow” a lot more often.
