I was asked by Theo Chapman to look for interesting insights on women executives working in Australian ASX companies who earned over $AUD2m. Every year the AFR commissions an extensive executive salary survey, so we had the data ready to explore.

I wanted to show firstly the distributions of salaries that ASX executives receive, and wanted to make sure that the salary Shemara Wikramanayake of Macquarie Bank received was highlighted (and how out of the ordinary it is). She was the second highest executive overall earning $16.29m, behind Macquarie Bank CEO Nicholas Moore. The second thing I wanted to show was that most of the 21 women holding executive positions are clustered at the lower end of the scale.

A few people were doubtful that a classic box and whisker plot would be understood by readers, but...the AFR audience is a very numerate group of people, and many of them would see graphics like this in reports they read every day. I also ensured that we included a "how to read this plot" explainer as well, so people who may not be familiar with this type of chart could get acquainted!

After running the analysis and building the prototypes, Les Hewitt took them and built in some interactivity. You can read the whole article here
